Last month I teased a plan to attend the Craft Cinema Dublin event. To recap, that’s a film screening that happens with the lights on and the audience is invited to bring along any kind of crafty handwork, sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery. Anything goes as long as the project is small enough to avoid stabbing your neighbor with a needle.
The evening’s screening of Mamma Mia was a sell-out and the profits were donated to the crowdfunding campaign for a wool processing mill trying to expand services for local producers in the West of Ireland. For a ticket price of only €11, the event was able to raise a €1,000 contribution.
All ages, all types of handwork, and the occasional sing-a-long (and a little chair dancing too!). If my experience was any indication, new connections made as well – I got a gracious invite to join a monthly meetup group from a lovely woman who was a complete stranger until she sat down behind me. Craft Cinema is on summer break for a couple of months, but I’ll be first in line when the next tickets are released. Why doesn’t this exist everywhere?
